Looking for a healthy, light and super fresh Mexican snack? You don’t need to look any further. Here it’s the perfect choice: Jicama (yam bean) & Pepino (cucumber) with chili-salt and lime mix.
This Mexican snack is the best thing you can prepare during this Australian summer. It’s exotic, delicious and so refreshing.
Jicamas with pepino is the typical “botana” (snack) served in any traditional Mexican cantina and bars in all cities across the country. Normally, it is paired with a Mexican beer or a Tequila shot.
This snack is also very well sold by street vendors in Mexico, by which many families can make a good profit out of it.
Jicama, where to find it?
I bought these beauties in a grocery shop in Marrickville in Sydney for $3.50 AU. You can also buy jicama at any Chinatown in Australia. Because it’s an exotic “veggie” it’s quite expensive but it’s worth the price. You will love its flavour and texture (similar to an apple) and your body will receive the benefits of its numerous nutritients.
TAJIN, the essential Mexican ingredient
I use to make my own chili-salt mix at home but you can buy “Tajin” instead, which is kind of an essential ingredient in any Mexican pantry. I haven’t know yet any Mexican who doesn’t have at least one bottle of Tajin at home even in Australia, where its price is more than double compared with how much it costs in Mexico.
In Sydney you can buy Tajin at Fiji Market in Newtown (I absolutely love this store) or online from Fireworks food.
Tajin is made with chili, salt and lime powder. Its tangy, medium spice flavour makes it perfect for margaritas, tacos, vegetables and fruits but Mexicans use it for EVERYTHING.
Jicamas, pepinos, tajin and some extra fresh lime juice is all you need to make this traditional Mexican snack by your own. Are you in?
